If you ever find yourself on Java, a trip to Mt Bromo is a must. Hire a jeep and driver in Malang who will pick you up (sometime before midnight) for the drive up to the lookout. You’ll arrive just before sunrise, which is spectacular. Afterwards your driver will take you down into the caldera, where you can hike up the new cinder cone and look over the edge into an active volcano!
